Preview: How pride affects our lives. This is the first part of a two-part lesson on this subject.
Scripture Reading: I Samuel 2:1-10.
Memory Verse: Proverbs 8:13.
1. Can man achieve anything without God’s permission according to the foregoing Scriptures?
Note: While God has given man a free will to choose what he will do or whom we will serve, man can only go as far or live as long as God will permit. Man will always reap what he sows.
2. What are seven things which the Lord hates? Proverbs 6:16-19.
Note: Pride is in the same class with lying, killing, and sowing discord and strife in the Church (among the brethren).
3. What else did Solomon tell us about pride? Proverbs 16:5 & Proverbs 21:4.
Note: The pride that God hates is the spirit of vanity (the desire for vainglory), self exaltation or self conceit. Pride takes control when we forget that God and God alone is the Commander and Chief.
4. What remedy did He offer for this attitude? Proverbs 16:1, Proverbs 16:3 & Proverbs 16:6.
Note: The only cure for (self) pride is committing all to God and letting Him clean the heart.
5. What is the root cause of pride? Genesis 3:6 & Romans 12:3.
6. How can we prevent this pitfall? Romans 12:1-2 & Ephesians 4:23-24.
Note: Our thoughts and actions must be under the control of the Holy Spirit.
7. Why should a novice (new convert) not be put in a position of leadership? I Timothy 3:1-2 & I Timothy 3:6-7.
Note: Their faith, love, and works should be tried first. If the attitude is wrong, their works will not prosper.
8. Why is this so? I Corinthians 13:1-8, I Corinthians 13:13, I Corinthians 8:1 & I Corinthians 8:9-12.
9. What else will a spirit of pride cause us to do? Proverbs 28:25-26.
10. Why can we not trust our own heart? Proverbs 16:2, Proverbs 20:6 & Proverbs 21:2.
Note: Pride will make us think we are alright when we are not.
