Preview: The importance of humility to our salvation. This is the first of a two-part series of lessons on this subject.

Scripture Reading: Matthew 23:1-12.

Memory Verse: James 4:5.

1. What do we see from the foregoing Scriptures?
Note: Spiritual humility is to be meek and lowly (gentle, mild, and unpretentious). When we seek to elevate ourselves to a position of honor, rather than service, we are out of order with God.
2. How does God honor the humble? James 4:6 & James 4:10.
3. Do we show a lack of humility when we boast about what we will do tomorrow? James 4:13-14 & James 4:16.
4. What will a humble spirit cause us to say? James 4:15 & Hebrews 6:1-3.
Note: Even the ability to grow spiritually comes from the grace of God.
5. What example of humility did Jesus present? Matthew 18:1-4.
6. Should we depend on our own intellect and understanding? I Corinthians 8:2-3 & I Corinthians 3:18-20.
7. What will a spirit of humility cause us to do? Romans 12:9-10 & Romans 12:13-16.
8. Was this Solomon’s understanding of humility? Proverbs 3:5-7.
Note: Humility is freedom from pride and arrogance. It does not attribute to one’s self the goodness or honor that belongs to God.
9. Why is it better to be poor and humble than rich and proud? Proverbs 16:19, Proverbs 18:12 & Proverbs 22:4.
10. What will the attitude of the younger Christian be toward those who are mature in the Lord? I Peter 5:5-6.
Note: The humble will show respect and honor for those who have more knowledge and experience in the Lord, regardless of their position in life.
