Preview: A history of God’s chosen. This is the second lesson in a thirteen-part series of lessons on this subject.

Scripture Reading: Exodus 15:1-19.

Memory Verse: Exodus 14:31.

1. Did Moses and Israel glorify God for His goodness to them in the foregoing Scriptures?
2. How did Miriam praise the Lord? Exodus 15:20-21.
Note: The leaders and the people had seen the mighty hand of God. They knew that He alone had delivered them from the inhuman bondage of Egypt, just as He had promised their father Abraham. These people knew their history. There was no doubt that God was faithful and able to do what He had said.
3. How long did their gratitude last? Exodus 15:22-24.
4. How did God respond to their complaints? Exodus 15:25-27.
5. How soon did they forget again? Exodus 16:1-3.
6. Did God again supply their needs? Exodus 16:4-5, Exodus 16:8, Exodus 16:10 & Exodus 16:13-16.
7. How did Israel respond to God? Exodus 16:19-20 & Exodus 16:22-24.
Note: As we read these reports we are prone to wonder how these people could so soon forget all of the mighty wonders that they had seen their God perform. We also wonder why God was so patient and long-suffering with their lack of faith and obedience. The fact is God knew that these people were just starting on their journey of faith. He gave them every opportunity to grow to spiritual maturity, just as He does today. Our God is always faithful, patient, and full of grace and love. He gives us time to grow and repent.
8. Why was there no manna on the Seventh Day? Exodus 16:25-30.
Note: Please note that even before God wrote the Ten Commandments in stone at Mount Sinai the people were already commanded to observe God’s Sabbath.
9. Did it strengthen Jethro’s faith in the Lord when he heard how God had delivered Israel? Exodus 18:1-3 & Exodus 18:6-11.
10. What wise advice did Moses’ father-in-law give him? Exodus 18:13-24.
Note: Moses was the man with the God-appointed authority, but he showed true wisdom and humility by following the wise advice of his God fearing father-in-law. If only our church, national, and world leaders would seek wise counsel from those who walk in the wisdom of God; what a different world this would be. A wise parent will also seek godly counsel concerning their children; especially in today’s sick, uncertain society. God’s people need the prayers, encouragement, and godly counsel of one another.
