Preview: A history of God’s chosen. This is the fourth lesson in a thirteen-part series of lessons on this subject.

Scripture Reading: Exodus 20:1-17.

Memory Verse: Romans 7:12.

1. Do we find in the foregoing Scriptures that God knew that any collective body of people must have laws in order to survive? Discuss.
2. How did Paul explain man’s need for laws? II Timothy 3:16-17.
Note: It is simple enough to understand that a nation must be governed by laws. Why is it so difficult for man (especially those who consider themselves Christians) to realize that the Church cannot function without law and order? Let us not forget that Israel was God’s Church in the wilderness when God gave them His constitution. Acts 7:37-38. Jesus gave the Church grace when He wrote these laws in men’s hearts and put them in their minds. Hebrews 10:12-17.
3. Whose law was the legislation that given to Moses? Exodus 20:1-6, Exodus 31:18.
4. For what purpose did God give man laws? Exodus 20:18-20.
Note: Surely there was no doubt in Israel’s mind who gave them these laws, and Moses made it very clear that God’s constitution was established to keep His people from sin. Did God’s standards change? Hebrews 12:21-29.
5. What did Yahweh promise to do for Israel even before He delivered them from Egypt? Exodus 6:6-8.
Note: Israel’s God had delivered them from Egypt as He promised. At Mount Sinai He declared them to be His people, the Church of the firstborn. He gave them laws by which they must be governed if they were to survive in the land to which they were going. God alone had delivered them from bondage. Exodus 19:3-5, it was strictly by His grace and not by their good works. God’s grace did not start with the New Testament; neither did His laws and Commandments end there.
6. What other protection did God provide for Israel? Exodus 13:18, Exodus 13:20-22.

7. Who did they blame when trouble came? Did they doubt God? Exodus 14:9-12.
8. How did God protect them from this danger? Exodus 14:19-22.
9. For what purpose did God form this body? Exodus 29:43-46.
10. Had God ever promised such blessings to any other nation or body of people? Exodus 15:22, Exodus 15:24-26, Exodus 23:25-26, Psalm 147:19-20.
